FRESHMAN YEAR 2010 - 2011

ESLR |2A Complex, Critical Thinkers who:
Analyze, synthesize, interpret and evaluate information from a variety of resources.
COURSE: Biology

ASSIGNMENT TITLE: Disease Presentation

DATE OF PROJECT: 08/08/2010

Topic

One project that involved using information from a variety of resources was my Disease Presentation for Biology class. This project required us to address topics about a certain disease, and my group’s assigned disease was called Diabetes Mellitus 1. The topics researched had been a total of four and each member of the group was in charge of one specific topic. The topics were whether the disease was genetically inherited or a lifestyle cause, what the treatments for the disease were, how the disease was diagnosed, and what the symptoms of the disease were. The resources used to find the answers to these questions were various websites on the Internet that described the topics with true facts.

Parameters

The amount of time given for this project had been three to four weeks. The amount of time that I worked on the project had been about two days every week in order to create the checkpoints (that were due every week) and to eventually work on the PowerPoint presentation (that was required to have at least three to four slides) that was due as our ultimate project. The resources used for this project were medical websites from the Internet such as www.emedicinehealth.com that provided the answers to my specific topic of what the symptoms of the disease are. The websites such as this one had given an elaborate description of the symptoms for Diabetes Mellitus 1 and had met my criteria of containing a description of the specific symptoms that signalized that someone was at risk of having Diabetes Mellitus 1. The different websites were meaningful because every website gave details on the symptoms, provided me with information that resources hadn’t already provided (such as more symptoms), or had a better description of the symptoms that I had already found from other websites.

Explain how the evidence you selected demonstrates your ability to effectively analyze, synthesize and evaluate information to develop a meaningful product. Please make sure you break down each of the components (analysis, synthesis and evaluation—not necessarily in that order) and explain.

When analyzing the information found, I read the description of the symptoms, and then I also read how the person was affected by each symptom that the specific disease had. Furthermore, I analyzed how effectively the symptom signalized that the person had Diabetes Mellitus 1. Analyzing all of this helped in creating the project by allowing me to understand the knowledge and information of the symptoms. The skills that I used when evaluating the information that I gathered throughout the project’s preparation were comprehension and analyzing. I used these skills when connecting the websites’ information together and evaluating the sustainability of the information that I read.

ESLR #2A Reflection

Difficulties that had to be overcome throughout this project were the lack of detail that most of the resources had and not being able to find many different resources with the correct and specific information that I needed. The skills that helped me complete this project will benefit my college education and assignments. They will help me by providing me with practice towards how to make connections between varieties of resources. Also, by being able to analyze the amounts of information in a more effective way that helps and allows me to create a more elaborate project/assignment. In order to judge information in a more effective way, this project allowed me to practice the skill of analyzing information from a variety of online websites.Through this project I had not only learned more about Diabetes Mellitus 1 but had also learned how to utilize information more effectively. Before I had given my oral presentation, there were many components that I needed to fill out first. By using the skills that I had gained through this project, I was able to get my work done and receive experience with analyzing data. Breaking down the information had required evaluation and comprehension towards the data of symptoms. Evaluation and comprehension are the skills in analyzing that could help in different life encounters with interpreting various resources whether for school or not.
