JUNIOR YEAR 2012 - 2013

ESLR |04 Ethical Citizens who:

Comprehend their roles as citizens and strive to improve the quality of life at school and the greater community, while developing respect, tolerance and understanding of individual differences and diversity.
Reflecting on all of your courses and any other experiences (service learning, clubs, sports…) this academic year, how have you grown as a citizen and strived to improve the quality of life at school and the greater community, while developing respect, tolerance and understanding of individual differences and diversity?

There is a sense of responsibility that I have as a citizen. This is because a successful world requires the contribution of everyone that takes part in it. This particular year included a political affair in which the entire school (and much of the community) was involved and affected. Throughout Lennox Academy’s journey to gain independence, I played a small yet vigorous part in reaching the school’s goal. For example, I attended the meetings and gatherings held at the school cafeteria and the Board of Directors’ location. This helped me stay well informed of the events firsthand, and it allowed me to spread the news to others who were interested in the matter. Moreover, I also spread the news to my family members so that they would be involved in the voting process that increased the school’s chances of becoming independent. The journey was arduous as there were still people who opposed the school’s independence. However, I had to keep in mind that there are different perspectives for a reason and those ideas still deserved the respect that I wanted for my own opinion. Overall, it ultimately taught me of the strength that a united team of perspectives can form while still remaining humble and aware of the opposing perspectives. Fortunately, the change did occur and it kept the school intact while achieving the goal of becoming an independent charter school. This year, my Engineering PLTW course involves interacting with people through various means. For example, the first stage of the course involved thinking of a problem and determining whether it exists in the real world. To help determine this, my team members and I created an online survey that was sent to the school emails of almost everyone in Lennox Academy. If the person followed the link provided in the email, then the individual could provide his/her perspective on the questions that we asked. Although there were some commentaries that did not provide proper feedback, my team was able to find those that did and tolerate the opinions of others. Furthermore, the project that my team is working on is meant to improve the helmets of youth, and so we must listen to the perspectives of people who may possibly purchase the item.

ESLR #4 Reflection

My service learning duties have increased this year. In 9th grade, I completed my community service hours as a regular volunteer at the St. Margaret’s Center. This meant that I only completed the duties assigned to me. Although this is a great activity in itself, I view myself as having improved in my service learning by gaining a leadership role in a tutoring program opportunity this year. Since I took the role of Vice President for the Interact Club (in the beginning of the school year), I have evolved in the area of community service. My leadership role now bestows upon me the duty of organizing students who want to participate in the Big Brother Big Sister Tutoring Program. My particular group walks from Lennox Academy to Buford Elementary school on Mondays after school to tutor children. I keep track of the high school students who attend the sessions so that they may have the evidence/support necessary for their community service. Moreover, I also keep my group up to date regarding the schedule/calendar that we must adhere to so that the elementary school students are not left alone by their “big brother” or “big sister.” The area in which I could still improve is understanding diversity. It may be strange for me to adjust to the diversity found in the college experience because I have lived in a largely Hispanic community for my entire life. My next step will be to take part in the networking system of my preferred college so that I may form bonds with people of other ethnicities and both understand and respect their culture and beliefs.
