SOPHOMORE YEAR 2011 - 2012

ESLR |03 Critical Thinkers who:
Effectively analyze, synthesize and evaluate information to develop a meaningful product.
COURSE: Chemistry

ASSIGNMENT TITLE: Adopt an Element

DATE OF PROJECT: 09/07/2011

Topic

This project addresses the elements of the Periodic Table. In class, we had been learning about the different element groups of the Periodic Table and the variety of information regarding the elements. For example, we had learned about what the atomic mass, atomic number, and atomic symbol of an element are and how to find each one on the Periodic Table. Furthermore, we had learned about how protons, neutrons, and electrons are associated with one another in regards to an atom and its structure. Using this knowledge and information, I was able to collect the required information for my specific element more easily.

Parameters

For this project, I had thirteen days to work on it. I worked on it for ten days by splitting up the work into small sections. The Adopt an Element project consisted of two key components with the purpose of providing information for a specific element on the periodic table. The first part was a fact information sheet filled out with information on the element that was assigned. The details that needed to be provided on the paper were things such as the name of the element, the symbol, the atomic number, the classification of the element, etc. The second piece of this project was the actual advertisement poster that displayed most of the facts gathered through the research. For example, the atomic number, symbol, name, and average atomic number of the element were supposed to be added onto the poster (along with a slogan and cost of the element).

Explain how the evidence you selected demonstrates your ability to effectively analyze, synthesize and evaluate information to develop a meaningful product. Please make sure you break down each of the components (analysis, synthesis and evaluation—not necessarily in that order) and explain.

This project allowed me to analyze the information that I found on various websites. When I read the articles I had to evaluate the research to see whether or not it was relevant to what I was looking for. Afterwards, I determined that the notions were accurate and that I should apply it to the project. In order to find the most basic information about the element, I went to websites such as http://www.webelements.com/sulfur/ andhttp://education.jlab.org/itselemental/ele016.html . Both of these websites provided me with more than just the basics on sulfur, my assigned element. However, when the websites did not directly portray and deliver the information that I needed for my project, I needed to synthesize the information. In order to do so accurately, I used the information from more than one website so that it could still be information that was educated and not false. Using these skills, I was able to develop my assignment properly piece by piece until I had the final result: an informative paper having to do with the element and a colorful poster that was attached to a Periodic Table on the wall of m y Chemistry class.

ESLR #3 Reflection

In terms of ESLR Three, I have developed in using many sources to obtain the information regarding the topic of my research. Last year, I had to find websites that provided facts about a disease. I was only able to find a handful of facts from the websites and books that I found. This year, I developed in my skill of evaluation and finding more facts from sources by using different search engines and keeping my topic in mind at all times. The skill that needs improvement is analysis because I do not always examine the information as well as I should. My next step in developing this skill is to read more books and dissecting the key information.
