RC Model Airplane
ENGS 154 - Aircraft Design
For this project, I worked with a partner to design a remote-controlled (RC) model airplane; after three weeks of research and lab work, we decided to develop one inspired by the cargo airplane design. To design the structure of the airplane, I referenced model measurements and preserved the measurements throughout the project development. From my detailed sketches, I was able to create a SolidWorks model for the various pieces that I then manufactured into wood through laser-printing. Once the electrical components were in place, the model airplane had multiple success runs and remained intact.
SKILLS DEVELOPED
- Digital Electronics: electrical component configuration (e.g. propeller, rudder control, tail control, radio transmitter)
- Control System Analysis, Feedback-Control System design procedure: root-locus and frequency response methods
- Fluid Mechanics: used XFOIL to design and analyze wings and overall structure, used OpenProp for propeller
- Solid Mechanics: material testing, determined which wood and size was most appropriate for a task
REFLECTION
This project had a weekly milestone, which helped me improve in time management and multi-tasking. Despite the fast-paced environment, I thoroughly enjoyed the need for accuracy and efficiency that helped fuse my innovative ideas together.
